2015 was a bumper year for the world's biggest luxury brand
The recession is obviously receding into the realms of distant memory for many Irish shoppers – new figures from Louis Vuitton show the company did remarkable business here last year.
Sales of Louis Vuitton goods jumped €2.7 million to €8m in 2015 – a more than 50% increase on 2014 – with one of its most popular ranges being the 'City Steamer' bags that trade for as much as €3,709.
The jump in shoppers forking out for expensive gear meant Louis Vuitton turned a profit of a cool €1.768m, representing an 88% increase.
Directors have stated their intention to pay a dividend of €1.55m this year, up substantially from €828,000.
Part of the multinational, stock market-listed LVMH company along with Moët Hennessy, the French fashion house opened its first Irish store in Brown Thomas on Dublin's Grafton Street back in 1999. Today, it is the most valuable luxury brand in the world, selling jewellery, shoes, watches and more along with the bags.
Said bags recently provoked the ire of Republic of Ireland captain Seamus Coleman, with the footballer singling out the goods as symbolisng everything that's wrong with the modern game.
"If I see a footballer with a Louis Vuitton wash bag I wonder what that does to others," the Everton right-back said.
"If you are the only young lad in the changing room without one then you feel that pressure that you need to go out and get one. Even if you don't want one or even like one.
"That's what I think is wrong with football. It's completely wrong. Your job is to train well and play well on Saturday and do well week in, week out. That's your job. Your job isn't to be going out and buying the best of everything just because someone else is.
"But they feel they all need to have the best because of the pressure. They think they need to look good on their Instagram pictures. They think they have to follow the leader but they are just kids – boys."
