The assistant state pathologist and the Garda Forensic Team have examined his body and the scene, which remains partially sealed off this afternoon.
It's thought the attacker may have escaped in a Volkswagen Caddy van which was found burnt out in the Verschoyle Green estate, around a kilometre away from the scene of the shooting.
The vehicle is being examined this afternoon.
Superintendent Peter Duff from Tallaght Garda Station says they believe the van may have been connected with the killing:
Mr Gibson is thought to have been a close friend of Darragh Nugent who was also shot dead last week, but gardaí say they're keeping an open mind about the motives for this killing.
They are appealing for anyone who was in the area between 9.00pm and 9.30pm or anyone with information to contact them Tallaght Garda Station on 01-666 6000 or the Garda Confidential Line on 1800-666-111.
