Rogue taxi drivers will be targeted by gardai as part of a national clampdown this weekend. It is part of an overall effort to clean up the industry and ensure passengers are kept safe.

It is estimated that there are around 100 people with various criminal records who should not be behind the wheel of a taxi or hackney.

Gardai are on the hunt for unlicensed vehicles and drivers who may have a criminal conviction.

There are currently 30,111 drivers licensed and 21,672 vehicles licensed around the country. Gardai say the vast number of these drivers and vehicles are compliant with all regulations.

The operation this weekend is one of ten planned operations that will take place nationwide in 2014.

Public Transport Minister Alan Kelly says it is important to monitor the taxi service.

Head of the Traffic Corps Assistant Commissioner John Twomey outlines the operation.

The new regulations governing the industry is being broadly welcomed by legitimate drivers.

Gareth Macken is from the Taxi Alliance of Ireland.

Customers are also being reminded they can check the legitimacy of their taxi using the taxi driver check app.
