Ikea is moving towards flatpack furniture which snaps into place like lego - this is intended to radically reduce the time that it takes to assemble its products.

Its engineers are developing 'wedge dowel' furniture which clicks into place - eliminating the need for keys, mallets and small parts.

"We are now into the implementation phase of making it possible for you to click your furniture together," Jesper Brodin  IKEA’s range and supply chief told Dezeen.

The move has been inspired by customer feedback expressing frustration about the amount of time (and effort) it takes to put Ikea furniture together.

"IKEA furniture typically contains quite a lot of fittings ... We see some challenges in the time and interest in doing that (putting furniture together)."

"So we thought, what happens if we try to take them out totally? We are now into the implementation phase of making it possible for you to click your furniture together," Mr Bordin continued.

Ikea's Isabo

An Ikea spokesperson confirmed to Newstalk that "wedge dowel will be rolled out in more of our ranges over the coming years."

The mechanism is already used in some of its products, including the Isabo table, and Valje and Regissor shelves which are on sale in Ireland and it's going to become a lot more common.

This will also make it easier to take apart and reassemble Ikea fixtures when moving.
