The IFA whistleblower who blew the lid on the pay scandal at the organisation is making a last-minute bid to be put back in the running to become IFA president.

Derek Deane failed to get the backing of six county executives before the Wednesday deadline of 5.30pm.

However, when he checked his voicemail the next morning Deane discovered that the Monaghan county chairman had given him his backing at 5.15pm Wednesday evening.

The Monaghan chairman transferred his support last minute from current deputy president Tim O'Leary - who also failed to receive a nomination.

Henry Burns from Laois, Joe Healy from Galway and Flor McCarthy from Kerry are contesting  the presidential election, to be held in April.

Each of the candidates received the required number of nominations - their own county executive and five other county executives

But Mr Deane told Newstalk Breakfast earlier he should be included on the ballot, despite the technical error with his voicemail.
