Hundreds of thousands of people have taken to the streets in South Korea's capital Seoul demanding the removal of the country's president.

It is the fifth weekend protesters have turned out to demonstrate, and the latest demonstration is the largest yet.

According to the Korea Herald, 800,000 people had gathered in the capital's Gwanghwamun Square by early evening - with organisers later saying that number increased to around 1.5 million.

BBC reports that police put the number significantly lower at around 260,000.

Additional protests took place in towns and cities around the country, with reports putting the total number of demonstrators nationwide at 1.9 million.

Demonstrations were continuing into the early hours of Sunday morning, with speakers and musicians scheduled to appear on stage.

In the coming days, lawmakers will attempt to impeach President Park Gun-hye.

BBC reports that the South Korean leader has been accused of allowing her friend - Choi Soon-sil - manipulate power from behind the scenes.

Ms Park has apologised following the revelations, saying she "put too much faith in a personal relationship and didn't look carefully at what was happening".

The president's approval rating has fallen to a mere 4%.
