For one day, One for Ireland is uniting retailers, charities and the media in the name of homelessness.

On April 29th, One for Ireland will integrate charity into people’s everyday lives, giving everyone the opportunity to give €1 to charity as they go about their daily business.

The goal is to raise €1 million on the day, breaking the record for the most text donations in a single day (about 50,000) and create the biggest 24-hour fundraiser they possibly can.

On the day, when paying for goods in any retailer, every customer will be asked, “Would you like to give One for Ireland?”.

You will then have the option to add €1 to whatever you're purchasing, thereby raising funds for homelessness.

The initiative divides Ireland into nine geographical regions, and a percentage of the funds raised will be assigned to each region. The fundraising will benefit One for Ireland's charity partners across the country, including Focus Ireland, The Simon Community, St Vincent de Paul, The Peter McVerry Trust, Threshold or Barnardos in each region.

The charities chosen in each region will receive between €60,000 and €150,000.

One for Ireland’s development team has created a system whereby it takes just four seconds to donate, and 120 seconds for the retailer to return the money raised to One for Ireland through PayPal. This method was previously trialed in all FRESH stores in Dublin with incredible success, raising an average of €1,100 per location on the day.

The One for Ireland team comprises seven recent graduates who are all working on a volunteer basis, which will ensure that 100% of all the funds raised will go to Youth Homelessness projects all around Ireland, with nothing being taken in salaries or administration.

You can follow One for Ireland on Facebook and Twitter, or donate whatever amount you like to the cause on the One for Ireland website.
