Heineken has retained its spot as Ireland's favourite alcohol brand for the third year in a row according to Checkout's survey of sales across the country's supermarkets, off-licences, and forecourts.

While the magazine's analysis notes that Ireland's craft beer sales are booming none make the list, as Irish drinkers continued to buy "mainstream" options.

These beers are often the focus of multi-pack promotional offers in supermarkets. Checkout notes that sales of these brands generally rise and fall as offers come and go.

The year also saw the launch of Heineken's cider, Orchard Thieves - it comes in at 32 on the list. Despite this launch, Bulmers remains in 4th place in the rankings - although Kopparberg did fall down the rankings.

In the spirit market vodka is the nation's choice drink - Smirnoff is ranked 2nd - while Huzzar also makes the top 10. Jameson is Irish consumers favourite whiskey - coming in 6th.

Santa Rita remains the most popular wine company, while Blossom Hill, McGuigan, Wolf Blass and Casillero del Diablo occupy places 12 through to 15.

Heineken launched a number of new advertising campaigns during 2016, they were anchored by sport and music. It partnered with the 2015 Rugby World Cup and the UEFA Champions League - building complex marketing campaigns around these events. It also had major presences at both Longitude and Electric Picnic.
