With Netflix getting more and more of the home entertainment pie, one of the vestiges of high-production value original programming is looking to reclaim some of the that lost audience.

Home Box Office has long been the synonymous with must-watch TV - Game Of Thrones, VEEP, True Detective, Boardwalk Empire, Sex & The City, The Sopranos, Oz, to name but a few - but it's unique cable packaging programme meant that those outside of the U.S. had to wait for local channels to air the shows, or much more likely, source them illegally online.

HBO have released a cable-free streaming service known as HBO NOW, but the service is only available within the US and certain US territories, there have only been 800,000 subscribers since it's launch last April.

Comparatively, Netflix recently broke 75 million users, and HBO is re-aiming for their next platform launch.

HBO have announced at their Q4 earnings call that they plan to increase original production to 50%, as well launching an international streaming platform for their content.

The company is looking to become "ecosystem agnostic", which is a complicated way of saying that they now plan to become readily available on laptops, smartphones, smart TVs, etc - which would make for clean break from the cable packages of the past.
