The Greek parliament has passed a new round of austerity before its next tranche of bailout funding is expected to be released after Tuesday's meeting of eurozone finance ministers.

Syriza, the leftist group who were elected on an anti-austerity platform, backed the measures which were passed by 153 votes to 145 last night.

This paves the way for the unlocking of fresh funds from its €86bn bailout package.

Demonstrators gathered outside parliament in Athens as the legislation was passed.

"European leaders get the message that Greece is sticking to its promises ... Now, it's their turn," prime minister Alexis Tsipras said before the vote, according to AFP.

The state's tax intake will be increased by €1.8bn as VAT was increased from 23% to 24% and a state privatisation fund was established.
