Acting Taoiseach Enda Kenny has refused to comment on how government talks are progressing.

Talks on government formation are continuing between Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil - and are reported to be making progress.

It comes as Labour leader Joan Burton has written Labour Party members to advise them that she is making preparations for a fresh election.

She also appears to have ruled out the idea of Labour re-joining Fine Gael in government.

The Dáil sits for the fifth time today since the general election, without any sign of a Taoiseach being elected.

A vote expected to take place later does not appear on the Oireachtas agenda.

Going into the talks this morning, Mr Kenny refused to engage with the media. He instead changed topic to the recent IFA election.

While Independent TD Danny Healy-Rae has suggested that Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil have their mind on another election rather than forming a government.

And political editor of the Irish Times, Stephen Collins, told Newstalk Breakfast he believes Enda Kenny will not be Taoiseach next year.
