The Government has officially launched a new nationwide mortgage arrears resolution service.

The scheme - called 'Abhaile' - offers free financial and legal advice, with a priority on those most at risk of losing their home.

It is being run jointly by the Money Advice and Budgeting Service (MABS) and the Legal Aid Board.

The Tánaiste and the Social Protection Minister have launched the service, which will see eligible clients given vouchers to obtain expert advice on resolving their debt issues.

Tánaiste Frances Fitzgerald said: "The Government is committed to ensuring that homeowners who are struggling with mortgage arrears, and are at risk of losing their homes, can access independent expert advice and help on getting solutions into place."

Annmarie O’Connor, Business Manager with MABS, said: “Too often borrowers don't act because they're frightened there is no solution for them. It doesn’t have to be like that. Already, this new service has given our clients access to solutions that previously wouldn’t have been possible.

"There are solutions that can help people keep their homes and there are experts that can help. It’s a huge relief when people find a solution."

Abhaile can be contacted at 0761 07 2000, 9am to 8pm Monday to Friday.
