Recognising its universal appeal, the United Nations has made June 21st the International Day of Yoga.

The theme for 2017 is 'Yoga for Health.'

Organisers say it highlights the fact that yoga can contribute in a holistic way to achieving an equilibrium between mind and body.

The Indian embassy in Dublin is inviting members of the public to take part in a free event on Dartmouth Square Park in the city on Saturday.

The Deputy Lord Mayor of Dublin and the Indian Ambassador, Vijay Thakur Singh, will open proceedings at 10.30am. This will be followed by a yoga class led by Louise Horgan.

Speaking about the initiative, Ambassador Singh said: "I look forward to seeing yoga enthusiasts come together in large numbers.

"We are delighted to have support from many organisations, Yoga associations and Indian companies including TCS.

"I am confident that the International Day of Yoga will be a great success in Ireland."

The embassy and Dublin City Council are organising another event on June 21st, in City Hall on Dame Street, where yoga instructors from Yoga Therapy Ireland will be demonstrating postures.
