US actor George Clooney has spoken of his Irish heritage while talking with Syrian refugees in Berlin.

George and his wife, lawyer Amal Clooney, sat down to hear from three Syrian families in the German capital.

They were joined by the president and CEO of the International Rescue Committee (IRC), David Miliband.

"I'm of Irish descent, and in America 100 years ago we were refugees, my family", Mr Clooney told the audience.

"The Irish were treated terribly in America for a period of time and not accepted - and America learned to accept all of these ideas", he added.

The couple heard tales of bombings, shootings and torture in the war-torn country.

Clooney has been involved in several humanitarian campaigns.

"You forget that these aren't just people who have just left their country for no reason at all - these are people who have left because of incredible tragedy - and they were people who had real lives, normal lives", he said.
