Garda Commissioner Noirin O'Sullivan has admitted that there has been a resurgence in gangland crime this year.

The criminals will however continue to target each other, regardless of the level of resources put in place, Ms O'Sullivan said.

"The reality is you cannot have gardaí every palce all of the time.

"Unfortunately the reality of life is that some of these criminals are determined to perpetrate the most terrible violence against each other. 

"And when people are determined to carry out these deeds, no matter how many gardaí you have they will carry out their intent," she said.

Three people have been murdered in gangland killings this year, the same as the total for all of last year.

The funeral of one of those, Vincent Ryan, takes place tomorrow with a policing plan in place.

While the gardaí say that they will have adequate policing to combat the threat of dissident republican activity during the 1916 commemorations.

It comes after a prison officer suffered serious injuries in a bomb blast on Friday, and a number of viable devices were uncovered in Antrim over the weekend.

All leave for gardaí in Dublin has been cancelled during the commemoration period.

Garda Commissioner Noirin O'Sullivan said that fighting gangland prime is a priority.
