The Garda Ombudsman (GSOC) is appealing for witnesses after a stand-off in Dublin yesterday in which armed gardaí fired shots.

They took aim at a van that refused to stop on Jamestown Road in Inchicore yesterday afternoon.

Officers seized a gun and a silencer during the operation.

A man in his 20s was arrested, but gardaí - who suspect they foiled a gangland hit - are still searching for a second suspect who fled the scene.

GSOC says a dark coloured jeep was abandoned at Tyrconnell Park a short time after the incident.

Anyone who witnessed the events or has any information is being asked to contact GSOC on 01-871-6664.
