French state-owned international news broadcaster, France 24, has launched a Spanish language channel.

This is in addition to its French, English and Arabic-language versions.

The new channel will broadcast six hours a day of programmes for Latin America audiences, supplemented by its programs in French.

The channel says its Spanish outlet will provide French perspective on international news, with a large focus on regional issues.

It is based at new offices in Bogota, Colombia.

The French, English and Arabic channels’ major magazines will also be broadcast for Spanish-speaking viewers.

A new Spanish version website of the channel has also been launched.

The new channel's team comprises 35 journalists and 10 correspondents.

The network will broadcast to 6.5 million homes across 10 countries in Latin and South America.

France 24 says: "The channel will have a multinational editorial team based in Latin America, supported by a large network of correspondents across the continent.

"The editorial team will work closely with a based team Paris, which will be responsible for French and international content, and will benefit from the expertise of RFI’s Spanish editorial team, which is a real asset in this project."

France 24, which broadcasts on five continents, is available to Irish viewers on several platforms.

It says its three channels have a combined weekly viewership of 50 million viewers.
