Four men have been arrested in Dublin following an operation targeting an organised criminal gang involved in burglaries.

The men were arrested in Lucan yesterday in connection with a robbery in Mullingar, Co Westmeath.

The men - one in his 60s, one in his 20s and two in their 30s, all from Dublin - are being held at Mullingar Garda Station.

It comes as part of Operation Thor - An Garda Síochana's national anti-crime strategy to tackle organised crime gangs and repeat offenders.

Gardaí say the latest phase of the operation is focused on "preventing a predictable upsurge in burglaries which occurs during the winter months".

The force says senior officers have been asked to focus on gathering intelligence on crime gangs who travel around the country to commit burglaries, before using motorways to "ensure speedy escape from crime scenes".
