The first round of fare increases for public transport users kick in today.

Price hikes have been sanctioned by the National Transport Authority, for Bus Eireann, Irish Rail, Dublin Bus and Luas users.

Irish Rail fares will rise by an average of 9% for DART, Short hop commuter services and Intercity, while Cork commuter services will go up 4%. Monthly and annual Irish Rail tickets will increase from today, while cash fares go up from December 1st.

For Bus Eireann passengers, monthly and annual Taxsaver ticket prices go up today, with cash fares again increasing on 1st December. The average increase is 3.5%.

Luas all zones monthly and commuter tickets are staying the same, but 3 zones monthly and annual fares are going up.

People who use Dublin Bus are spared the increases for another month. Although they're increasing by an average of 10%, the hikes will not kick in until 1st December.

The National Transport Authority is defending the hikes and says commuters who use Leap cards will continue to pay the lowest fares, with some Leap prices actually reducing.
