The first US commercial flight between the United States and Cuba since 1961 takes place today.

It comes just over a year after raising the flag at US embassy in Havana, as the two countires continue to warm relations.

US Secretary of State John Kerry called it 'another step forward'.

Earlier this year the first hotel in Cuba to run under a US brand, Four Points by Sheraton, opened in the capital.

The inaugural JetBlue flight 387 will leave Fort Lauderdale, Florida for Santa Clara, Cuba with an estimated travel time of just over one hour and 10 minutes.

It will be operated on an Airbus A320 aircraft.

The airline has advertised fares from US$99 (€88) one way.

It is offering upcoming routes between Havana and New York, Fort Lauderdale and Orlando.

However it notes that these are also subject to "final government approval".

Marty St George, executive vice president of commercial and planning at JetBlue, said: "It's a new day for Cuba travelers and one we have thoughtfully prepared for.

"We are proud to usher in a new era of Cuba travel with affordable fares and great service."
