Fine Gael has reached its highest level of support since before the last election.
The Red C poll for the Sunday Business Post puts the government party at 30% - up 3% since its previous poll.
Of the other two major parties, Fianna Fáil is up 2% to 26%, while Sinn Féin is on 16% down two.
Michael Brennan, Political Editor of the Sunday Business Post, says Micheál Martin's party will be happy with the steady increase:
“It is a reasonable position for them,” he said. “They are certainly not losing out as Fine Gael gains support but there big focus in the next two-and-a-half weeks will be on the budget and trying to put their best foot forward there.”
“You have Sinn Féin – a disappointing result for them, they are down by two points.
“There biggest problem in recent weeks has been dealing with a stream of bullying allegations by their own member and that is not good publicity.”
He said the results show the centre is holding strong:
“That is 56% of the first preference vote among the two big parties which is quite striking,” he said.
“It hasn’t been that high since about the 2011 general election.
“So perhaps a return to the traditional parties but there has been a Dáil break and often the government party does better then so you may see a pick-up in support for other parties and independents in the coming weeks.”
The Dáil enters the second week of the autumn term tomorrow – with the upcoming budget set to dominate the agenda over the coming weeks.
