Ferry linking Down and Louth cancels its maiden voyage

The Scenic Carlingford Ferry has cancelled its inaugural sailing from Greencastle in Co Down to Greenore in Co Louth.

It was set to made its maiden, cross-border voyage on Friday - but the operator says that due to severe weather conditions it will now sail for the first time at 10.00am on Saturday.

The project that has been in the works for almost 50 years.

The new ferry service is set to boost to tourism in the north east region, and will create 18 new full time jobs.

The launch is the result of a €10m investment by Frazer Ferries Group - which included the construction of terminals at Greencastle and Greenore.

There was also investment in navigation equipment and a state-of the-art 44 car-vessel.

The crossing will take 15 to 20 minutes and will traverse one of the most scenic stretches of water on the island of Ireland.

Operators say taking the one mile journey by ferry will save passengers almost 35 miles and up to 90 minutes by road.

Speaking from the ferry on its first passenger sailing, Paul O'Sullivan - founder and managing director of Scenic Carlingford Ferry - said: "We are delighted to announce the ferry's first passenger sailing today and look forward to welcoming visitors on board to experience everything that this service has to offer".

Tickets for cars and small vans start from €6.50, while foot passengers and cyclists will pay €1.35.

Other vehicles which can use the service include minibuses, motor-homes and commercial vehicles.

But articulated lorries cannot use the new service.

The ferry is to operate every day, Monday to Sunday, every half hour from 7.30am until 9.30pm - except Christmas Day.
