Move over Tinder, there’s a new ‘dating’ app in town and it’s swapping spontaneous hook-ups and drunken booty calls for cuddles.

Smartphone app Cuddlr claims to do exactly what you think might think. Users sign up using their Facebook profile – a la Tinder – look at other users, and try to match themselves up with those they fancy.

The one exception is that you aren’t supposed to be searching for a date per se. The idea is simply to find someone you want to hug... and that’s all.

You send the person of your choice a ‘cuddle request.’ If you’re lucky enough to have it accepted, the app will show you their location and then off you go, on your journey to find a cuddle partner.

However, the app doesn’t share the user’s location until they’ve indicated they want to cuddle a chosen person, and users can be blocked.

The app doesn’t currently have filters for age or gender either.

“We encourage you to consider cuddling with people who you wouldn't date, sleep with, or even find attractive - as well as those you would,” the developers said.

“For that reason, while you can scroll past anyone or decline their cuddle requests, and you can block individuals, we do not have built-in filters for categories of people.”

The app is currently only available for iOS, but an Android app is in the works, but isn't likely to launch until next year.

Charlie Williams is the founder and creator of Cuddlr.
