The Egyptian Ambassador to Ireland is being asked to appear before an Oireachtas Committee over the Ibrahim Halawa case.

The Dubliner has been held in an Egyptian prison, without trial, for nearly three years now.

Ibrahim (20), who is from Firhouse, was arrested at a protest in Cairo in August 2013.

His hearing was postponed again last month - the 14th time the mass trial has been delayed.

The next court date has been set for October 2nd.

Two weeks ago, the Dáil passed a motion calling for an increased diplomatic effort to have Mr Halawa returned to Ireland.

This morning the Oireachtas Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Brendan Smith proposed they call in the Egyptian Ambassador to Ireland.

"I propose that we invite Ambassador Gendi to appear before the Committee next Thursday," he said. "I'm anxious that we get this business dealt with before August."
