Not content with ruling the charts, singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran has revealed that he will guest star in the hit HBO fantasy saga series Game of Thrones’s seventh season.

Speaking at the South by Southwest festival in Austin, Texas, Game of Thrones’s producers David Benioff and DB Weiss announced that the Shape of You singer will be dividing the warring dynasties of Westeros. The 26-year-old Briton seemed to confirm the news, tweeting a link to the story on the Vanity Fair website.

At a panel discussion of the show, which will see its penultimate season debut in July, Benioff and Weiss said that Sheeran had been on their list of cameo performances for years, with the redheaded singer joining the likes of heavy-metal rock band Mastodon, Coldplay’s Will Campion, Snow Patrol’s Gary Lightbody, Icelandic band Sigur Rós, and a wax head of George W Bush.

Benioff and Weiss revealed that they wanted to cast Sheeran as a nod to actress Maisie Williams, with the Arya actress reportedly a huge fan.

“For years, we tried to get Ed Sheeran on the show to surprise Maisie, and this year we finally did it,” Benioff said.

Despite a critical panning, the recent release of Sheeran’s third album ÷ has seen the singer-songwriter storm the charts across the Irish Sea; all 16 singles on the record are currently in the UK Top 20 singles based on sales and streaming data, while all three of his albums are in the top five.
