Moves to end the war in Syria will top the agenda today when EU foreign ministers hold their first meeting of 2016 in Brussels later.
Ahead of the gathering, Foreign Affairs Minister Charlie Flanagan called on all parties to support the UN's efforts to find a resolution.
United Nations-sponsored peace negotiations are due to get underway this week in Geneva.
CEO of Irish aid agency GOAL is Barry Andrews - he says Ireland could be making greater efforts to promote peace:
"There is definitely room for more activism, and for more creativity. Ireland has a unique role to play. Not only are we a post-conflict island, but we are also a non-belligerent, as far as the coalition against ISIS is concerned."
