An application is being heard to have the attorney general of Bahrain brought before Dublin District Court on charges of alleged torture.

It was brought by a political activist - Jaafar Al Hasabi - who claims he was tortured in his home country in the 1990s and again during a six month detention between 2010 and 2011.

He claims the attorney general knew he would be tortured and wants him prosecuted under Irish legislation.

The reason he is applying to the Irish courts is twofold.

Firstly, the UN Convention Against Torture is a part of our criminal legislation and secondly, Bahraini attorney general Ali Bin Fadhul Al Buainain is in Dublin for a conference.

The hearing is continuing this afternoon.
