Dublin Chamber of Commerce has said the city centre is open for business despite disruption from Luas Cross City works.

From 8pm tonight Aston Quay and Burgh Quay will be closed to traffic for the week to allow construction to take place.

There has been widespread criticism of the plans to begin what is the “final significant piece of road construction” for the project over the bank holiday.

The work is expected to cause traffic chaos as thousands of fans arrive in the city for two GAA All-Ireland fixtures and a friendly fixture between Liverpool and Athletic Bilbao.

Traffic coming into the city centre and a number of bus routes will also face diversions and motorists are advised that they can expect delays.

Gráinne Mackin, communications director with Luas Cross City said it is inevitable some people will be inconvenienced - but insisted the works must stay on schedule.

She told Newstalk what visitors can expect on their way into the city:

Dublin Chamber of Commerce Spokesperson, Graham McQueen said shoppers should not be put off visiting the city:

"We are about to see some pretty intense Luas works kicking off in Dublin City Centre over the next few days," he said.

"However, the hope here in Dublin Chamber is that these works won't affect business in the city centre too much this weekend.

"The city centre very much remains open for business.

"We have a full public transport offering, so if you are looking to come into the city centre over the weekend the advice would be to take the train, take the bus or make use of the bikes that are there."

Aston Quay and Burgh Quay are set to reopen to traffic on Saturday week.

Luas Cross City is set to launch passenger services in December – with tram testing and driver training due to take place in the coming months.
