Drew Harris is to be sworn in as the new Garda Commissioner on Monday.

As a result, acting Garda Commissioner Dónall Ó Cualáin will step down at midnight.

In line with the Garda Síochána Act, Mr Harris will be attested as Garda Commissioner just after midnight and immediately take up his new role.

This will take place in Kevin Street Divisional Headquarters in Dublin.

The Gardaí say this will be a private occasion with a small number of people present.

Mr Harris will be attested by a Peace Commissioner and also sign the Garda Code of Ethics and the Official Secrets Act.

While an introductory press briefing will be held on Tuesday September 4th in Garda Headquarters at the Phoenix Park.

Earlier in August, the High Court dismissed a legal challenge to the appointment of Mr Harris as Garda Commissioner.

Victims' campaigner Ciarán MacAirt applied for a judicial review of the decision to appoint the former PSNI Deputy Chief Constable to the position.

Lawyers for Mr MacAirt claimed the appointment represented a threat to Ireland's national security.

However, Judge Denis McDonald ruled that Mr MacAirt had not reached the legal threshold required for the challenge to go before a full hearing of the High Court.
