President Obama called on an audience of Hillary Clinton supporters to stop heckling a pro-Trump protester who interrupted the president's speech at a rally in North Carolina.

The commotion broke out when an elderly man in what appeared to be a military uniform and holding a Trump sign started yelling from the stands.

It led to a raucous response from the gathered crowd.

President Obama, however, repeatedly called for calm as he attempted to get things back on track, repeatedly asking everybody to 'hold up' and "sit down and be quiet for a second".

“You’ve got an older gentleman who is supporting his candidate," Obama argued. "He’s not doing nothing. You don’t have to worry about him. This is what I mean about folks not being focused.”

He continued to defend the protester's actions as the man was removed.

Obama told the crowd: “First of all - hold up! - first of all we live in a country that respects free speech, so... Second of all, it looks like maybe he might have served in our military and we ought to respect that.

"Third of all - he was elderly and we got to respect our elders. And fourth of all - don't boo. Vote!”

Obama has appeared at numerous Clinton campaign events in recent days, while Clinton herself is taking advantage of high-profile supporters such as the president, Bernie Sanders and numerous celebrities to try to win over voters.
