The redevelopment of Dún Laoghaire Shopping Centre has been granted planning permission, and it should be completed during the second quarter of 2017.
It will cost some €10m to revamp the centre, adding two anchor stores on George’s Street and Marine Road, with floorspace of 3,262 sq m and 1,825 sq m.
The shopping centre has an annual rental income of €2m. Tesco, Specsavers, New Look, SuperValu, LifeStyle, and Starbucks are among its 45 tenants.
The centre reports that business is strong between Monday and Friday, but it has struggled on weekends. Its average footfall is 65,000 shoppers per week.
Jason Miller, director of Murphy Mulhall, who manage the property, told The Irish Times about the project:
"We have been in close talks with a number of parties for these superb spaces and getting the grant moves us a step closer to taking Dún Laoghaire back to its rightful position as one of the ‘go to shopping destinations’ in South County Dublin," he said.
The centre opened in 1976 and was Ireland’s first multi-storey covered shopping centre.
