An 800-page document has been released and they show plans to essentially destroy the entire "Soviet block".
According to Dr. William Burr, the senior analyst at the National Security Archives, the plan involved using H-Bombs against priority "air power" targets in the Soviet Union, China and Eastern Europe.
Some of the major cities that were being targeted included East Berlin, Beijing, Moscow, Leningrad and Warsaw.
The interactive map below shows the exact locations of the intended bombings.
The Strategic Air Command (SEC) requested a 60 megaton bomb, the equivalent of 4,000 of the atomic weapons used in Hiroshima.
Specific aiming towards highly populated areas, which the plan involving the "systematic destruction" of urban areas with explicit targeting towards the population, is seen as being against the the general rule of warfare.
