The number of people killed by Hurricane Matthew in Haiti has passed 1,000.

The fiercest Caribbean storm in almost a decade struck the country on Tuesday with winds of more than 140 miles an hour.

Haiti is now dealing with cholera and having to bury some of the victims in mass graves.

Meanwhile, Hurricane Matthew is now known to have killed 17 people in the US.

Around half the deaths came in North Carolina - where a life-threatening flooding situation remains.

The storm has been downgraded to a post-tropical cyclone.

Ireland is to provide humanitarian aid to Haiti in response to the hurricane.

While UNICEF Ireland has launched an emergency appeal for the children of Haiti - after assessments indicated they need US$5m to carry out essential life-saving work.

It says the heavy winds of up to 140km/h and flooding damaged homes, schools and health centres.

UNICEF says: "Basic social services, already fragile before Matthew, are now mostly wiped out.

"Trees and crops are gone in many places, which will likely result in food insecurity and a spike in child malnutrition", it adds.
