There has been a large increase in the number of people who cycle to work every day.
Figures from Census 2016 show the car is still the most popular choice for commuters – however the number of cyclists has increased by 43%.
The cycling craze is centred on Dublin – with two thirds of all cyclists recorded in the capital city and suburbs.
Nearly 40,000 people cycle to work in Dublin – compared to just over 2,300 in Cork, 1,874 in Galway, 968 in Limerick and 395 in Waterford.
Three quarters of cyclists are male.
Long road
The figures show that over 1.8 million people commute to work every day in Ireland – an increase of 10.7% on 2011.
The length of time it takes to get to work has increased significantly for many people – with one-in-ten now taking an hour or more to commute.
That is an increase of 31% on 2011.
Commuting
The car remains the go-to for 65.6% of commuters – however there were also large increases in bus and train use, which were up 22% and 19.7% respectively.
Nearly one-in-ten use public transport to get to work – however, again this figure was much higher in Dublin where 22% use the bus or train, compared to 8% in Cork.
Walkers account for 9.3% of the commuting population.
