A man has been arrested at Dublin Port after a crackdown by Revenue officers.

On Monday, €160,000 was confiscated from the man in his 40s as he was about to board a ferry to Holyhead.

Officers have granted a three-month detention order by Judge Walsh in the Criminal Courts of Justice in order to carry out further investigations.

It was the start of a busy week for Revenue in the capital. In a separate operation, thousands of cigarettes were seized earlier today when an apartment was searched in the North inner city.

Revenue's Customs Service officers seized 3,280 cigarettes and 2.6kgs of tobacco - which included Malboro and Golden Eagle brands - with an estimated retail value of €2,600 and a potential loss to the Exchequer of €2,180.
