Gardaí in Leitrim are investigating a serious assault which has left a man in critical condition.

The 30-year-old man was found unresponsive on the road in Carrick-on-Shannon early Sunday morning.

Just before 4.00am yesterday, gardaí received a report that a man had been assaulted and was lying on the Main Street in the town.

He was found unresponsive, and ambulance attended the scene.

The man was taken to Sligo University Hospital, where his condition is described as critical.

Gardaí say the injured man was in an altercation with a group of people - both men and women - on the footpath on Main Street, which then continued onto the road.

Gardaí have interviewed a number of witnesses and have viewed CCTV footage in the area.

They are appealing for witnesses - in particular, anyone who may have picked up a group of people around 4.00am in that area - or anyone with information to contact them on 071-965-0510, the Garda Confidential Line at 1800-666-111 or any garda station.
