The government is being called upon to act to save jobs at Cadbury's in Coolock in Dublin, and Rathmore in Co Kerry.

It was announced yesterday that parent Cadbury's company - Mondelez Ireland - intends seeking up to 160 redundancies.

The firm also plans to close its gum factory in Tallaght in Dublin with the loss of 62 jobs.

It has also been announced that production of wafers will be moved out of Ireland due to falling demand - with Pink Snack bars being discontinued entirely.

The plant will instead focus on production of Dairy Milk, Flake, Boost and Twirl bars.

The Rathmore plant, which employs 84 people, has been in operation since 1948.

While the production plant in Coolock opened in 1964 and employs more than 700 people.

The Unite union, which represents around 400 workers at the Cadbury plants, is to meet with management to discuss the implications of the announcement.

Fianna Fail Senator Averil Power says that the Jobs Minister Richard Bruton was aware of the situation a few days ago - and that the minister should explain whether he took steps to prevent the job losses.

Senator Power says these jobs are a huge blow to the area of Coolock in north Dublin.
