Foreign ministers from the six founding states of the European Union have met in Berlin to discuss Brexit - and the UK wasn't invited.

The ministers from Germany, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Luxembourg delivered the message from the meeting that the Brexit vote will not destroy the EU.

German foreign minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier vowed they "won't let anyone take Europe from us" but admitted people throughout the continent deserved better solutions to problems such as unemployment, the refugee crisis and terror.

"After the British decision, we must also not allow ourselves to lapse into inaction," Minister Steinmeier said. "The change that is taking place is necessary and I am certain that the 27 states will defend this Europe, with a strong will to also make this post-British-decision Europe stronger."

The meeting came after Germany warned of a domino effect of other states voting to leave the EU.

A government paper mentions France, Austria, Finland, the Netherlands and Hungary may follow the UK and leave the bloc.

Far right leaders in France and the Netherlands are already calling for their own forms of the Brexit referendum.

France's National Front leader Marine Le Pen yesterday changed her Twitter profile picture to a Union Jack and declared "victory for freedom," while the Dutch anti-Islam MP Geert Wilders said: "The Dutch people deserve a referendum as well."
