Labour TD Brendan Howlin says he still hasn't decided whether or not he'll be putting himself forward as the next leader of the Labour Party.

The former Minister for Public Expenditure says he is still in the process of considering what role he'll play in rebuilding the Labour Party.

Nominations for Joan Burton's successor opened yesterday, and will close at noon on Friday.

So far, Alan Kelly is the only of the seven Labour TDs who has publicly declared his intention to run for the leadership position.

But Brendan Howlin says he will take on a role that is in line with the wishes of the Labour Parliamentary Party.

Speaking to reporters outside the party's annual James Connolly Commemoration he said: "I want to play whatever task the parliamentary party wants to give me in rebuilding the party, in ensuring that we're back shaping the future of our country."

"Politics is about practical doing", he added.
