Prosecutors in Belgium say five people have been detained after a fire at a lab used to analyse DNA samples at crime scenes.

One theory is the criminal institute in Brussels was targeted to destroy evidence.

The fire did cause an explosion, but there were no casualties.

The country's prosecutor's office says the incident is likely to be an arson attack.

Suspects set fire to a lab used to analyse DNA samples found at crime scenes.

A car was reportedly rammed into the Brussels Criminology Institute earlier this morning.

Some laboratories caught fire, but there are no reports of casualties.

It happened shortly before 2.30am local time.

State broadcaster RTBF said damage at the site was significant.

The institute is linked to the Belgian ministry of justice and carries out forensic investigations in criminal cases.

The terror alert in Belgium remains high since bomb attacks on Brussels Airport and the city's metro claimed by the Islamic State killed 32 people in March.
