A solar-powered houseboat that is believed to have drifted across the Atlantic has washed up on a beach in Co Mayo.

The strange discovery was made yesterday near Cross Beach.

A note discovered written on the craft suggests the previous owner wants the boat to be donated to a "homeless youth to give them a better life".

The note is apparently signed by Rick Small - a Canadian man who made headlines last year for his solar-powered 7,000km bike ride across his home country.

On their Facebook page, Ballyglass Coast Guard Unit write: "We were tasked by MRSC Malin following a call from a member of the public who while he was out walking came across an unusual type of vessel washed up onto the shore near Cross Beach."

Comments and photos shared underneath the post suggest that the craft - in a much better condition - was previously spotted at Portugal Cove, Newfoundland.

The damaged but intact craft was secured last night and efforts are taking place today to remove it from the water.
