At least one person has been injured after a pedestrian bridge collapsed on a motorway in the UK.

The accident happened on the busy M20 in Kent.

Journalist Kalpana Fitzpatrick, who had been driving on the road, told Sky News: "What we can see is two trucks squashed by this bridge and emergency services are at the scene. From what I can tell they are treating one person.

"There are quite a lot of people just walking around the motorway not knowing what is going on.

"The side I'm on, the bridge is still hanging, and obviously the traffic has been stopped. It's quite shocking."

Video footage from the scene shows the top of a lorry's trailer sheared off, and debris littering the carriageway.

A fire engine has managed to get close to the scene, while a helicopter has been hovering overhead.

Motorists caught up in the stoppage have got out of their cars to survey the scene.

Highways England spoke of a "vehicle striking a bridge", and said the road was expected to be closed for some time.

A message on its website said: "All emergency services are en-route or in attendance.

"Road users are being strongly urged to plan ahead and use alternative routes."

South East Coast Ambulance Service said a motorcyclist in their 50s had been taken to hospital in Tunbridge Wells with suspected broken ribs.

Kent Police said the injuries were not thought to be life-threatening.

The force said in a statement: "(Police were) called at 12.07pm on Saturday August 27 to a report of a bridge collapse between junction 4 and junction 3 on the M20 London-bound.

"It is believed a lorry collided with a pedestrian bridge which has collapsed onto the carriageway below."
