The Army Bomb Disposal Team has carried out a controlled explosion on a "complex" viable device in Carlow.

The team was called to the scene at Kilmeaney, near Carlow Town by gardaí this afternoon.

After their arrival at 5pm, the team identified the device as a “complex viable improvised explosive.”

It was made safe through a controlled explosion and the scene was declared safe at 6pm.

The remains of the explosive were transferred to a secure military location for further testing.

The army said any material that could be used as evidence will be handed over to the gardaí as they continue their investigations.
