Police in the UK are appealing for information after a puppy was drowned during a burglary.

Burglars entered a property in the Gorleston area of Norfolk on Wednesday, and stole a number of items including a computer.

A seven-month old puppy, who was in the property at the time, was drowned in the bathtub.

Benji the cockapoo was found dead by his owner, Susan Walker, following the break-in.

She told the Eastern Daily Press: "Everything we lost is immaterial. The fact we lost the puppy is the most devastating thing.

"I will never be able to go into that bathroom again.

"Benji was really playful and part of the family. I have not told the children what has happened. We have told them he has gone missing and police are helping us find him."

Detective Sergeant Richard Wallis said: "This is a particularly cruel crime and I would urge anyone who may have seen any suspicious behaviour in the area at around the time of the burglary to come forward."

MP for Great Yarmouth Brandon Lewis said it was "mindless behaviour that defies understanding."

The RSPCA told Newstalk.com while they are not investigating the incident, they are aware of it and offering assistance.

An RSPCA spokesperson said: "This sounds like a heartbreaking incident.

"We have been made aware of the tragic death of a dog in Great Yarmouth and have offered our assistance to the police investigation."
