Dogs of all shapes and sizes are getting into the festive spirit in Dublin at the annual canine carol service.

The lunchtime Peata Therapy Dog Carol Service takes place in Christ Church Cathedral on Tuesday at 1.15pm.

The cathedral will be filled with the sound of barking as Peata dogs, as well as other dogs, will be welcomed to the service.

There will also be a pet blessing at the event.

Many of the people who benefit from visits by Peata volunteers will also be there.

Peata is a voluntary organisation, which provides a pet therapy service to caring institutions.

Its visiting scheme involves approved volunteers and their dogs who generally pay weekly visits.

A collection will be taken up during the service and divided between Peata and the Peter McVerry Trust.

Tea and mince pies will be served after the service courtesy of the Friends of Christ Church Cathedral.

Dean of Christ Church Cathedral, Dermot Dunne, says the dogs are mostly well behaved:

"There is one carol that they bark to, and that's 'Away In A Manger' - other than that, it's fairly OK.

"They don't make any noise - and the other thing is they don't fight with each other either".

"The high point of the service is the blessing of the dogs themselves".
