Angelina Jolie has criticised the international community for not doing enough to help refugees displaced by Islamic State in Iraq and Syria.

The actress has been visiting a Kurdish refugee camp in northern Iraq in her role as a United Nations Special Envoy.

During her visit she met mothers whose children have been kidnapped by IS.

Jolie said they need to know the world will be with them:

The actress was appointed as Special Envoy to High Commissioner António Guterres in 2012, the same year she last visited Iraq.

The Domiz camp in Iraq is now said to host 50,000 Syrian refugees, compared to 8.500 in 2012.

"It is shocking to see how the humanitarian situation in Iraq has deteriorated since my last visit," she said.

"On top of large numbers of Syrian refugees, two million Iraqis were displaced by violence in 2014 alone. Many of these innocent people have been uprooted multiple times as they seek safety amidst shifting frontlines," she added.

It is estimated that 3.8 million Syrians have fled to neighbouring countries, with more than seven million more believed to be displaced within Syria itself.
