Good news for those who like to gamble, as Aer Lingus looks to take a roll of the dice on Las Vegas.

There are currently no direct flights from Ireland to Sin City, despite the US holiday destination's popularity here, but all that is set to change.

In an interview with the Irish Independent, the airline's chief executive Stephen Kavanagh confirmed that Aer Lingus is planning a new direct route from Dublin to Las Vegas next winter.

He told the newspaper:

""We are working to build a business case to operate a seasonal service to Las Vegas. We need to find a balance to the peak summer months, where the US consumer the main source of our traffic and where Ireland is the destination."

Whether it will become a year-round service or simply be "tactically" deployed in a seasonal manner has not been decided as yet. It would only operate between two to three times per week.

"We've a lot of issues to put to bed, not least the cost of the operation, but we think there's demand there," he said. "We can see from our own traffic data that for the Irish consumer Las Vegas is very attractive."

Currently, Irish travellers have to fly to London first before making the transatlantic trip, or opt for a connecting flight in a North American city such as Toronto, New York, Chicago or Los Angeles.

Another part of the interview is unlikely to leave Kavanagh too popular with top people at daa today, as he questioned whether the State needs to own and operate airport terminals itself, suggesting that privatisation would increase efficiency.
