More than 25,000 litres of beer has been seized at Rosslare Europort.

In a statement, Revenue said the haul was discovered during a routine operation aimed at finding alcohol products that may be smuggled into Ireland without payment of tax due to the State.

The beer had a retail value of over €100,000 – and would have represented a loss of over €50,700 to the Exchequer in VAT and Excise Duty.

It arrived in to Rosslare in a foreign registered truck that disembarked a ferry from France.

Both the truck and the smuggled beer were seized by Revenue officers.

Investigations are ongoing with a view to prosecution.
