As states declared their election results across the US, it seemed increasingly likely that Donald Trump had pulled off a major upset.

Clinton supporters had gathered at the Jacob Javits Center in New York, but pictures and videos showed the atmosphere was far from jubilant as Trump won key swing states such as Ohio and Florida.

Elsewhere in the city, however, there were jubilant scenes as it became increasingly clear that Donald Trump was performing far better than expected.

Supporters were gathered at the New York Hilton Midtown for what the candidate has always billed as a 'Victory Party'.
