A 13-year-old Irish girl has been named the EU Digital Girl of the Year 2015.

Niamh Scanlon was honoured at a ceremony in Luxembourg today for an app she created aged just 11.

The teenager says she is honoured and that all children should have the opportunity to learn coding.

Niamh began to learn code at the age of nine at CoderDojo in Dublin City University., and has mentored there for three years now.

“Coding is a skill that I think all young people should get a chance to learn, because it means you can not only use technology, you can create things with it too,” Niamh said.

“Young people, teenagers and younger, around Europe and around the world are already learning to create and solve problems with coding, and it is going to be amazing to see what they do in the future with these skills."

Niamh’s app – Recharge my eCar – has previously won awards from Coolest Projects and the Eir Junior Spider. It is designed to help drivers of electronic cars find available charge points.

This is the second year in a row that an Irish girl has won the European award – with nine-year-old Lauren Boyle winning in 2014 for her website Cool Kids Studio.
